sperm whale是Spermaceti Whale的词尾省略形式.Spermaceti Whale就是"产鲸脑油的鲸鱼"的意思.鲸脑油（spermaceti）又称为鲸腊,是一种白色的腊状物质,其名称源自拉丁文 sperma 与 ceti,意思分别是“精子、精液”与“鲸”,当初发现时被人误以为是抹香鲸的精液.鲸脑油的主要成分是十六酸鲸腊醇酯（分子式 C15H31COOC16H33）,熔点摄氏42至50度,不过鲸脑油的实际熔点接近或略高于抹香鲸的体温.
鲸脑油储存于抹香鲸头部称为“抹香鲸脑油器”的腔室中,一头抹香鲸的头部可能含有1,000升以上的鲸脑油.
sperm 不光有精子的意思，还有鲸油的意思，抹香鲸的英文名为 Sperm whale 来自鲸蜡(Spermaceti) 一词，那是因为它那方形巨头中有一特殊贮藏装置里的油状蜡。一头抹香鲸的头部可能含有1,000升以上的鲸脑油。
终于有人提这个问题了，我当时也很纳闷，后来一查，sperm一个意思是精子，另一个意思是鲸油，（精油？），这个地方特指龙涎香。所以sperm这个词的一个重要意思就是与抹香鲸有关的。sperm whale当然是抹香鲸了。
